I honestly thought finding safe makeup that has the performance and payoff comparable to MAC would never happen. No, don’t get me wrong…I love my safe Beautycounter makeup, but being brutally honest, I sometimes missed that super soft texture and bold look it seemed I could only get with MAC. That is why I am so excited to bring you this Beautycounter Get the Look Review…

I was first introduced to the new, higher performing makeup early May at our Leadership conference. And here’s the truth in how this went down. I was running way late to an event and needed to do my makeup. I was already wearing the Flawless in Five, six products to give you that natural, yet pulled together look. But I wanted glam. I used the new sets in the pop-up shop and q-tips (q-tips y’all!) to do my makeup and I ended up getting more compliments than I’d gotten in a long time. The makeup was soft, glided on and there are cute little instructions with each set, so even clumsy me was able to do it!

Why I love these new powders and sets from Beautycounter Get the Look Review:

  • I used to love MAC makeup and the performance and payoff are the same.
  • I am not a makeup artist. The complete kit with instructions makes getting pretty easy.
  • The price point is reasonable.
  • GLITTER!!!
  • I like that I can go more natural or bold with any palate

WHAT MAKES THESE NEW MAKEUP POWDERS UNIQUE?

The new powders deliver on four key criteria called the 4 Ps’:

PAYOFF: one-swipe full-color intensity. Beautycounter selects safer, makeup artist-grade pigments that deliver a rich color payoff.

PRECISION: The new formulas goes through a triple-milling process that grinds the ingredients to the most perfect, most precise particle size. The result is silky-smooth, blendable powders with even application.

PERFORMANCE: long-wearing color. The new formulas contain ‘Butterpowder,’ which is a natural binding ingredient that helps the powders attach to the skin and stay on all day.

PURITY: Beautycounter rigorously screens every batch of our powders for heavy metals, to ensure higher-performing, significantly safer formulas. Additionally, all the new powder formulas are vegan, and the compacts are made with FSC-certified paper. The eyeshadow, bronzer and highlighter compacts come with removable mirrors.

How are Beautycounter’s Powders safer than traditional powders?

They are very selective of the ingredients used in formulations, in accordance with their Never List™. Additionally, they screen raw materials and the finished products to ensure they meet the strictest safety standards. When it comes to colorants, out of the 153 cosmetic colorants allowed in the EU, and the 63 cosmetic colorants allowed in the US, Beautycounter prohibits the vast majority from being used in their products. They currently use 18 colorants, 10 of which are “naturally-derived” and 8 of which are “synthetic” colorants. Through rigorous screening and testing process, commitment to transparent and ethical sourcing, and proactive involvement at every step of the manufacturing process, they are able to fulfill their promise and provide products that meet the highest standards of safety and performance.

Do the new makeup powders contain talc?

Yes, the new Beautycounter makeup powders contain talc. Talc is a highly prevalent ingredient in makeup powders in general because it is absorbent, an anti-caking agent, and skin protectant. They choose talc because when compared with similar ingredients with the same cosmetic function,
talc has lower heavy metal levels. The cosmetic industry standards require that cosmetic grade talc not contain any asbestos material. The Cosmetic
Ingredient Review (CIR) reports that talc is safe to be used in cosmetics up to 100% as long as there is no damage to the epidermal layer of the skin. Further, Beautycounter tests our raw materials to ensure that all products are 100% free of asbestos.

How does Beautycounter ensure the MICA used is ethically sourced?

They have developed a Supplier Code of Conduct that helps engage with suppliers, and improve practices throughout the supply chain. As part of this process, Beautycounter has ensured compliance by securing documentation from our mica suppliers that they do not engage in child labor practices.

Another reason I just love this company! Transparency and people come before profits!

If you’ve never heard of Beautycounter or are curious, here are a few more details….

What is Beautycounter makeup?

Beautycounter makeup is makeup that has been formulated with the highest quality and safety standards. It is high performing and beautifully packaged as well.

My favorite part about their makeup is that each batch is third-party tested 3 times for heavy metals and only goes to market if there are no detectable limits!

Where to buy Beautycounter cosmetics?

Beautycounter can be purchased online , at the summer Nantucket or  East Hampton pop-up shops (please tell them Melissa Schollaert sent you!) or a consultant can help you make a purchase in person, over the phone, etc. I would love to help you make the switch to safer products! Simply fill out this form to receive your personalized recommendations or message me here.

Are Beautycounter products natural?

Beautycounter uses many ingredients that are certified organic, natural, or naturally derived, and some of the safer synthetic ingredients too. It is important to know that “organic” and “natural” do not have legal definitions in the cosmetic industry; companies can say that a product is organic when in fact there are no certified organic ingredients in it, or there are only a couple. A lot of products in the beauty aisle also make claims about health: “hypoallergenic,” “natural,” or “doctor-approved” may come to mind. Unfortunately, a lot of these terms are meaningless.

Beautycounter is a very transparent company using safely sourced, high-quality ingredients, that are then rigorously tested to ensure human safety (more info here).

Are Beautycounter products worth the money?

I think so! The products are safe, high performing, beautifully packaged and when you shop with Beautycounter you’re supporting the advocacy work they’re doing to get safer products into everyone’s hands as well as the consultant you’re shopping with! The income I earn with Beautycounter allows me to keep producing blog content and feed my family.

Beautycounter also has a rewards program called a Band of Beauty Membership. Perks of this membership include a free full sized product as a welcome gift, free shipping on orders of $100+, 15% credit back on all purchases, and other exclusive offers throughout the year. Learn more here.

Beautycounter products are also very concentrated and last a long time. Check this out:

Are Beautycounter products safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Yes. All of Beautycounter’s products are safe to use during
pregnancy and nursing. We screen every ingredient for
safety, keeping those especially vulnerable—like pregnant
women and babies—in mind.

I used Beautycounter products exclusively through my pregnancy and while nursing, due to the safety of the products, but remember, mama knows best. If there is ever a product or ingredient you aren’t comfortable using in any line-then don’t! Trust your gut and listen to your intuition. That’s the number one lesson I learned when becoming a mom!

  1. These colors are so vibrant and pretty! I don’t wear makeup often, but I sure love BC’s products.

  2. One of those eye palettes is absolutely to die for! I see sparkly gold <3 Such a shame that Beautycounter isn't available in the UK… Still though I love hearing about natural beauty products on the market. I'd never go back to the toxic stuff!
