I love chocolate and coffee, in no particular order. I found after my son was born coffee was just necessary. I wanted to be sure if I was ‘indulging’ in coffee, it would not be depleting my system. If traditional coffee isn’t for you, don’t fret, this healthy super food mocha recipe includes a caffeine free option.

I remember about 15 years ago when I discovered my love for coffee, I also discovered those flavored creamers. Most of which were sprinkled with things like hydrogenated oils, corn solids, sugar and the like. This mocha and the ingredients in it are nutrient dense and won’t leave you feeling lousy.

Health Benefits of This Recipe

Raw Cacao: is one of the highest magnesium containing foods and helps prevent deficiencies. It contains phenylethylamine, a compound that is referred to as the “love chemical,” because our bodies produce it when we fall in love! Phenylethylamine is also a natural energy and metabolic booster, as well as good for cognitive function. It contains energy boosting theobromine, which also helps lower blood pressure. Studies also show cacao is responsible for lower incidences of heart attack and stroke. (More on cacao benefits HERE.)

PowerCreamer: ghee from grass-fed cows supplies a ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids that are far healthier than butter from conventionally raised livestock. MCT oil (from coconuts) is like rocket fuel for the brain and metabolism (research also indicates its anti-aging, helpful for autoimmune conditions and lowering cholesterol. (1))

MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides. It is a concentrated form of fat that is about 6 times stronger than coconut oil when it comes to feeding your brain. The body makes ketones when breaking down fat which is a very efficient energy source and provides mental clarity.

PowerCreamer is soy free, sugar-free, lactose-free, and casein free. And at under $.70 a serving, it’s butter coffee done right at way less than a coffee shop price! I found PowerCreamer around the time my son was born and it has been a life saver. I tried butter coffee so many times, but never felt it was quite right until using PowerCreamer.

Maca: is a delicious Peruvian (or Bolivian) root. The maca root was prized throughout the Incan empire for its adaptogenic-like qualities that enable it to nourish and balance the body’s delicate endocrine system and to help cope with stress. It also energizes naturally, and it can aid in reproductive function, helping to balance hormones and increase fertility. Unique alkaloids found in maca, have been shown to nourish and support the endocrine system. Maca Powder is loaded with nutritious vitamins, minerals, amino acids and plant sterols, including vitamins B1, B2, B, C, D, E, iron, potassium, copper, magnesium, selenium, phosphorous and calcium. It’s a fiber-rich food and a good source of plant protein.

A few tips for the perfect brew:

Espresso is better for you than regular coffee because it has less caffeine is brewed on the spot. Espresso can actually be alkaline forming if you drink it within the first 15 minutes of being brewed. Be sure it’s organic!

Crio Bru is a coffee substitute made of roasted cacao beans. It’s loaded with antioxidants and minerals, with little to no caffeine. The flavor is similar to coffee without the acidity of some other coffee substitutes I’ve tried in the past. I’ve also heard great things about mushroom coffees but am yet to try them. I do use medicinal mushrooms daily (which need to be heated) for my Epstein Barr and immunity, but do not care for the flavor in this drink.
