Detox” may be a trendy buzzword, but it’s an absolutely necessary step in your health regimen. If you ignore it, your health will suffer.
Safe detox for nursing moms
is not only important, but it can be tricky. I’m going to break down some simple steps to safely and effectively detox while breastfeeding, without draining your energy.

What detox does to the body:

  • improves sleep
  • clears skin
  • boosts energy
  • eliminates brain fog
  • weight loss (especially in the belly)
  • boosts metabolism
  • improves mood
  • eliminates cravings

Who should detox?

That’s easy, everyone! We can’t escape the 80,000 chemicals in our environment.

The necessity for detoxification is based upon the principle that immunodeficiency, inflammatory, and degenerative diseases, from allergies to arthritis to Alzheimer’s, result from the toxic, accumulative effects of poisonous substances and pathogens within the body.

According to reports by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the average person now has 212 environmental chemicals in their blood  (things like mercury, lead, cadmium, and industrial chemicals).

The World Health Organization goes even further with studies claiming over 700 chemicals in our bodies.

It’s essential to have a strong digestive system and well-functioning detox pathways.

Why detox in spring?

Traditionally, Chinese medicine and Ayurveda view spring as a time for renewal.  Because our bodies are naturally in sync with the seasons, foods that support the liver are plentiful at this time. These include spinach, lettuce, snap peas, asparagus, celery, and berries; and bitter greens such as kale, dandelion greens, and chard.  Of course, cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are also plentiful in spring, but don’t feel the need to include them if they give your baby gas.

A few things to consider about detox when nursing (breastfeeding)?

I hear it all the time from postpartum moms, “I want to feel better and lose the baby weight, but is it safe to detox while breastfeeding?”

Yes, but don’t even think about it the first month or two, or three- listen to your body, energy and honor your circumstances. Drink bone broth everyday to nourish your system and sleep when your baby sleeps. Those two things will start a gentle detox and support your digestion, which must be working well to detox.

How detox your body naturally?

Easy does it when we’re working on safe detox for nursing moms, or humans in general!  This means no deprivation, restriction, heavy exercise or anything that will deplete your system. The goal of detoxing naturally, especially while breastfeeding, is to incorporate daily detox habits to build up and restore your system after having a baby.

Start with the basics:

  1. Hydrate: Drink filtered water with trace minerals so you’re hydrated at the cellular level and keeping up milk supply.  It will flush toxins, help with elimination and nourish your tired kidneys. For a boost, use this electrolyte powder with a squeeze of lemon.
  2. Eat a well rounded diet: Eat clean meats and wild fish, health fats, and plenty of the spring detox vegetables listed above. Add in wild blueberries and 2 servings of greens daily to gently remove toxins.
  3. Supplement smart: Just because you are no longer pregnant, it does not mean you aren’t still building a human. You still are for a full two years! Living in our toxic world with depleted soil means we need to fill in the gaps with supplements, especially to make top quality milk. Safe Detox for Nursing Moms:

Oil Pull: This Ayurvedic practice has been used for thousands of years for rejuvenation and detoxification. You simply swish oil in your mouth. It’s quite safe and effective. My energy picked up the first time I tried it and I’ve seen it cure acne in several of my clients! Head here for instructions, more info and benefits.

Support the liver: Take dessicated liver daily and cook with turmeric regularly.  Sip on milk thistle tea a few times a week. Read more here for more tips to support the liver.

Clean up your milk:  Take chlorella as it improves breast milk quality by filtering toxins. This study examined the effects that supplementing with 6 grams of chlorella per day had on breast milk quality. I recommend taking this one daily.

Dry Skin Brush: Supports our lymphatic system to support natural detox. Our skin is our largest organ and dry skin exfoliates, cleanses pores and reduces cellulite (aka toxins.) I felt a huge difference in my energy when I added daily skin brushing into my routine. Simply use a brush (like this) and apply gentle pressure. Brush in strokes toward the heart for about two minutes. Hit every area of your body and spend extra time on any areas with cellulite or that are retaining water.

Support Digestion: Take a high quality probiotic, drink and cook with bone broth regularly (everyday for at least the first 30 days postpartum) and use collagen in your smoothies, oatmeal, etc.

Clean up your makeup bag: Heavy metals and other toxins are prominent in color cosmetics and even more so in mineral makeup because the metals are in the earth and they hitch a ride with the rest of the ingredients. Beautycounter tests color cosmetics 3 TIMES PER A FORMULATION for heavy metals! I haven’t found any other company that does such thorough testing. Not sure where to get started? Fill out this simple form and I will send you a personal skincare plan!

  1. I LOVE that you mentioned Chinese Medicine and the belief about detoxing in spring, I follow this model too. It just makes so much sense!

  2. Some wonderful detox ideas. I much prefer the gentle approach myself too…even though I am past the breastfeeding baby growing phase of life! I have wanted to try oil pulling again too…thanks for the reminder!

  3. Great tips, and I have to say that even though I am not a nursing mom, they reminded me of some detox practices I’ve neglected lately. Will have to add them to my spring routine now.

  4. This is a great resource as I sometimes have mamas asking me this question. Will definitely point them in your direction. Thanks!

  5. Thank you!!!! I LOVE that you give options like this for breastfeeding moms. Most posts talk about all the things you should be doing but cannot if nursing.

Chollera- is that something one would take only for a detox or year round too?

    1. Hi Genevieve,

Thank you so much for your kind words! I would take it the entire time you are nursing to keep your milk clean!

  6. I love this article! This is a subject most wont address. My interest was piqued by chlorella, and I bought it through your link. However I have since read a couple places that there is concern to he chlorella will mobilize mercury into your bloodstream and therefore your breastmilk. Now I don’t know which to trust!

    1. Check out this study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12781705 It’s shown that using chlorella may be protective. Of course, you have to do what you feel best about. I have had heavy metal toxicity and when chelating, I felt horrible. I have never had any such experience with using chlorella. Chlorella has only made me feel more energetic. Again, do what you feel is right for you!
