That delicious fall feeling is in the air, and it’s the perfect time of year for flavorful casseroles and hearty soups.  Nothing makes a home feel cozier than a fragrant pot of nutritious bone broth simmering on the stove. My husband says it makes the house smell like Thanksgiving!  Whether it’s a special holiday meal or a regular weekday supper, it has been said that the basis for everything in cooking- is broth! Friends, you’re going to LOVE this 2 part post from one of my dearest and most healthy friends, Ginny Jeffery. She is a sweet southern girl who is going to show you all how bone broth is done!! She is a wealth of knowledge who has been a wonderful asset for us over at RNL!!

What is broth?

Broth, stock, and bone broth are often used interchangeably.  Technically, broth is made from simmering meat and vegetables in water whereas bone broth, or stock, adds bones to the pot for even more nutritional punch!

Stock can be used to replace water in just about any savory recipe.  Here are just a few ways you can utilize broth to impart extra nutrition to your meals:

-Thin your casseroles

-Base for stews, soups, and gravies

-Cook your rice and pasta in it

-Enjoy it right by itself, steaming hot in a mug!

What are the nutritional benefits?

Perhaps your mom or grandma always made a soothing chicken broth soup when you were sick.   Traditional wisdom holds that broth promotes health and most of us associate chicken soup with comfort (remember all those uplifting “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books in the 90s?). Unfortunately, since there are no companies making money from selling traditionally made bone broth, there have been few studies funded or lab analyses done (at least that I can find) on its exact nutritional breakdown.  However, the Paleo and Traditional Food communities claim that by slowly simmering the bones and vegetables, the minerals contained in them are released into the broth. My research indicates that broth contains the following nutrients:

Calcium- Bone and teeth health
Magnesium- Bone and teeth health, relaxation of blood vessels and muscles, bowel function, the “calming mineral”
Phosphorus- Bone and teeth health, digestion, energy, hormone regulation, protein production, brain health
Gelatin- A form of collagen. Skin, bone, joint, and tendon health.  Wrinkle and cellulite prevention!
Glucosamine and Chondroitin – particularly beneficial when taken together for cartilage health, flexibility, joint and muscle health
Silicon- Bones, connective tissue, “beauty mineral” for hair, skin, and nails, aluminum detoxification, prevents atherosclerosis
Sulphur-Detoxification, muscle, skin, and bone health
trace minerals

You had me at “cellulite prevention”.  I’m sure you recognize many of these minerals as rock stars of the supplement industry for their ability to promote beautiful skin, hair, nails, teeth, and strong bones.  If you have joint pain, muscle soreness, digestive issues, or just want more beautiful hair and skin, I’d say including this superfood is a must!

Why not just buy it from the store?

There are currently no commercial broths being produced using the traditional methods required to yield a nutrient-dense stock.  Commercial broths almost always have MSG or other nasty additives.  Read the ingredients on a box of broth at the grocery store and you’ll likely find “autolyzed yeast”, “natural flavors”, “spices” or some other sneaky name for MSG on the label.  If you’re lucky you may be able to source real stock from a local farm, but you’ll save money by making your own.

How do you make it?
